Who We Are
A tribally designated housing entity for the San Carlos Apache Reservation
Established in 1961 by San Carlos Apache Tribal Council Ordinance, the San Carlos Housing Authority (SCHA) is a Tribally Designated Housing Entity pursuant to the Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act of 1996. The SCHA currently operates its main office in Peridot and 2 satellite offices in Tufastone and Bylas. The SCHA staffs its satellite offices with occupancy specialists and maintenance mechanics.
The only provider of affordable housing on the San Carlos Reservation
SCHA’s purposes are to: (1) remedy unsafe and unsanitary housing conditions that are injurious to the public health, safety, and morals, (2) alleviate the acute shortage of decent, safe, and sanitary dwellings for persons of low income, and (3) provide employment opportunities through construction, reconstruction, improvement, extension, alteration, or repair and operation of low-income dwellings.
Over the history of its existence and operations, the Housing Authority has constructed and developed several low-income housing projects throughout the San Carlos Apache Reservation using a combination of federal funding, private grants, and state-administered tax credit programs.
